Part 5: The Industries
Finished product industries accept raw materials and put out a finished product (goods, food, etc.). They may close if they don't receive any raw materials over a long stretch of time. Also, only some of the industry's squares will actually accept materials.
In the original version, these industries will put out a small amount of finished products even if no raw materials are received. This differs from TTD, in which the industries only spit out products if raw materials are received.

Non-production industries, as the name suggests, only accept raw materials and don't product a finished product. They include banks (in the arctic and desert climates), water towers, and power stations. Power stations may shut down if they don't receive any coal, but banks and water towers never close.

Raw materials industries produce a steady stream of materials. They don't accept anything. These industries produce a fixed amount of materials each month, but the production level may change at the beginning of the month. Production will either double or drop in half. If the industry is already producing a minimal amount of material, then the game may decide to shut it down permanently.
Beware! An industry that you spent thousands of dollars building transport to could cut production or shut down with little prior notice. Also, the industry could double its output a couple of times over the course of a few months and then your stations are inundated with raw materials, which causes your ratings to drop.

Constant production industries
Some industries also put out a constant amount of raw materials each month and never run the risk of shutting down. The temperate climate bank, for example, puts out about 54 bags of valuables each month (it might vary slightly). The tropical lumber mill puts out about 180 tons of wood a month. Unfortunately, these two industries aren't around in the beginning of the game. You have to fund construction of the lumber mills (quite expensive), or wait for two or more banks to be constructed on their own. The banks will only build in cities with more than 1,200 people. (You could, of course, build them in the Scenario Editor if you don't want to wait.)
Tropical lumber mills are an interesting industry. They cut and clear trees in the rainforests, and then produce transportable wood. Since wood is the most valuable material in the tropical scenario (even more so than diamonds!), lumber mills can be quite profitable. Also, you save money if you plan to build near the lumber mill since you don't have to clear the trees yourself. Lumber mills are nice to have, if you can afford them! Note that lumber mills will only cut trees within 19 squares. If a lumber mill cuts down all of the trees within this area, it will halt production until new trees are planted by you or until they are planted randomly.

How do I increase an industry's production?
You can't. The game determines how much raw material is produced by an industry, a quantity that cannot be altered.
Finished product industries, however, spit out products relative to how much raw materials they receive. If you increase the raw materials sent to them, the the production will increase.
